Women at Sea: True Tales of Whaling Wives

Join New Bedford Whaling Museum docent Nancy Gentile for a program highlighting the true tales of whaling wives at sea. She will discuss life on board a whaling ship for the captains wife and crew, wives as nurses along with medicine/medical practices on board a ship, and the importance of mates' logbooks and ladies journals at sea. The presentation will also focus on the profiles of eight women who mostly hailed from New England, traveling the world on sea during whaling voyages. Items will be on display from the collection of the New Bedford Whaling museum.
Gentile served as a research librarian in various capacities for 39 years in private and public libraries. Following stints at the Newton Public Library and the Millipore Corporation, her longest tenure was at the Robbins Library in Arlington, Mass. Gentile has been a docent at the Whaling Museum since 2017 and enjoys giving tours to visiting student groups and adults weekly. She appeared last January at the Faunce School with Captain Michael Taylor for a talk titled, "A Day In the Life of a Whaler."
